Lewis Casartelli London. Early 19th Century mahogany wheel barometer

A rare and very fine quality early 19th Century mahogany Wheel Barometer. The arched top over case, of figured mahogany, with profuse 'rope-effect' stringing, and inset with long well-engraved silvered brass Fahrenheit thermometer and 8 inch diameter main barometer dial, signed by the engraver['Carsartelly Fecit' - sic] and with most unusual inlaid wooden bezel.

Casartelli immigrated from Lombardy in 1805 to work for his uncle, Giovanni Battista Roncheti, a renowned Manchester-based barometer maker. After his apprenticeship, he established a highly successful business in Liverpool, succeeded by his sons Anthony and Joseph, on his retirement in 1845. I surmise that the young Casartelli was somehow involved in the making of this barometer, rewarded by his uncle in having his name inscribed thereon.
