Good quality, mid-19th Century faded mahogany Stick Barometer in original condition; the "ogee" pediment over glazed, finely engraved silvered brass register plate, signed by the maker, and rack-and-pinion operated vernier; the trunk, of beautifully patinated, figured Cuban mahogany, edge moulded, and with the original concealed barometer cistern tube terminating within turned cistern cover.

Brother of John, the renowned cartographer, William Cary, himself, achieved widespread acclaim as an instrument-maker, working from premises in The Strand from 1789 until his death in 1825. The firm was continued by two of John's sons until 1890.
