Fine quality late 18th Century inlaid mahogany flat-to-the-wall Stick Barometer. The style and quality are typical of the work of Balthazar Knie of Edinburgh, to whom this instrument is attributed. The lancet top over well-engraved, silvered brass register plate with flower-head decoration, and signed by the retailer, clockmaker Peter Sharp of Coldstream. The trunk, edged in chequer banding and ebony stringing, with exposed barometer tube terminating in two-part oval cistern cover, inlaid with stylised flower cartouche.

One of the foremost of Scottish Barometer makers, Knie emigrated from Southern Germany to Edinburgh and worked from 1776-1817 at various premises, especially in the Lawnmarket area.
