Good quality early 19th Century Cuban mahogany Stick Barometer; the 'break-arch' pediment, over engraved silvered brass register plate, signed by the makers and bearing manually operated vernier. The trunk, of well-patinated mahogany, edge moulded, and with original exposed barometer tube terminating within hemispherical cistern cover


On the death of her husband, Philip [a well-respected Birmingham instrument maker], Mary Carpenter went into partnership with William Westley, setting up premises in 24 Regent St., London in 1828. The firm subsequently flourished for nearly 100 years
