Giovanni Battista Roncheti - Manchester. 18th Century mahogany Stick Barometer

c 1780
Very elegant and well made late 18th Century mahogany Stick Barometer; the large broken arch pediment, supported on side brackets, over finely engraved register plate, bearing Fahrenheit thermometer and unusually decorated with Masonic symbols; the trunk, veneered in well-patinated Cuban mahogany, edge moulded, and with exposed barometer tube terminating in turned cistern cover.

One of the foremost of Italian immigrant barometer makers, who settled in Manchester around 1780, working from premises in the High St. until succeeded by his son, Joshua around 1815.
