Matthew Berge - London
Outstanding, early 19th Century “flame”

Stick Barometer; the ogee moulded pediment over
finely engraved silvered brass register plates,
signed by the maker and bearing the firm’s
classic ‘wrap-around’ vernier, operated
by solid state rack-and-pinion mechanism. The
well figured and patinated trunk, ebony banded,
and with original offset cistern tube terminating
within ebonised urn shaped cistern cover.

Jesse Ramsden was probably
the finest and most innovative barometer maker
of all time, achieving international acclaim
even in his lifetime. Berge, by dint of his
position as Workshop Manager prior to inheriting
the business in 1800 (on Ramsden’s death),
had been effectively responsible for the firm’s
output for a considerable time previously. Hence
the seamless continuation of finest quality
products under Berge, who contiued the business
until his own death in 1819.
