Very fine quality,
late 18th Century mahogany Stick Barometer,
with ‘'swan-neck' pediment over engraved
silvered brass register plate, signed by the
maker within banner cartouche and bearing manually
adjustable vernier. The case of ‘flame’
mahogany, banded in ebony and inset with long
mercury Fahrenheit thermometer; the concealed
barometer tube terminating behind turned cistern
cover, also of ‘flame’ mahogany.

Apprenticed to the eminent Edward Nairne, Long
became an accomplished London Instrument maker
in his own right, selling a wide range of instruments
from premises in the Royal Exchange between
1769-1811.
