Classically elegant Georgian
mahogany Stick Barometer; the 'break-arch' pediment
over engraved silvered brass register plate
signed by the maker and bearing manually operated
vernier slide. The trunk, of finely figured
and well-patinated ‘Cuban’ mahogany,
edge-moulded and with original cistern tube
terminating behind hemispherical cover.

Perhaps the most renowned barometer
maker, the firm of Dollond was founded in the
mid 18th Century by Peter [who became Instrument
Maker and Optician to King George II and III]
and which flourished until its acquisition by
Aitchison in 1913.
