Fine Antique Barometers

Negretti & Zambra - London

Good quality and unusual 19th Century oak cased ‘Admiral Fitzroy’s Storm Barometer’ - No. 1414 - in essentially original condition. The porcelain barometer plates bearing twin rack-and-pinion operated verniers for ‘today’ and ‘yesterday’, and signed by the makers. The inset mercury Fahrenheit thermometer also signed. The plates are protected by bevelled plate glass. The original concealed wide-bore barometer tube terminating in rectilinear cistern cover.

Negretti & Zambra were the world's foremost Scientific Instrument makers of the latter 19th and early 20th Centuries, producing a large volume of precision instruments. This type of barometer was produced at public expense primarily for sea-ports and hence was assembled entirely using screws and without the use of glue.
